Testing Your 911 Setup Safely with 933

Never dial 911 to test. Dial 933 to hear the emergency address and callback number we would send read back to you.

Never dial 911 just to see if it works. A test call to 911 reaches a real emergency dispatcher, ties up resources, and can result in fines. ReliaRing supports a safe test number instead: 933.

Never dial 911 to test your setup. Dial 933 — it goes to an automated test system and never contacts emergency services. The same goes for scripts, automated tests and speed dials: they must never use 911.

What 933 does

When you dial 933 from a ReliaRing phone, an automated system reads back the callback number and the emergency address that a 911 call from that phone would send. This lets you confirm, with your own ears, that responders would get the right address.

How to run a 933 test

  1. Check the caller's emergency registration shows Ready — on Emergency (E911) → Coverage or on their own page.
  2. From that phone (a desk phone, the ReliaRing app or the web phone), dial 933. During setup you can also use Dial 933 from the web phone.
  3. Listen to the readback and confirm the address is complete and correct.

The 933 service is free and safe to call any time. Your test calls, and what was read back, appear on Emergency (E911) → Compliance & testing, and the Overview tab shows the date of your last test.

After you make a change, wait a few minutes

A new or changed emergency address takes a few minutes to reach the 911 network. Wait about 5 minutes before testing.

If the readback is wrong or missing

  • The address is out of date. Update it on the Addresses tab, or change the caller's emergency registration, wait a few minutes and test again.
  • You hear no address. Check the caller's emergency registration status. If it says Failed, use Retry registration.
  • Still not right. Contact support with the number you tested and what you heard.

Your team sees a test alert

Your notification group receives a clearly marked test call alert when you dial 933, so nobody mistakes a routine check for an emergency.

Dialled 911 by mistake?

Stay on the line and tell the dispatcher it was a mistake and that you are safe. If you hang up, the 911 centre may call you back — or send someone to check on you — so please answer if they do. Your notification group is alerted either way, and a very short call is marked as a possible misdial in their alert.

Make testing a habit

  • Test after any move or address change.
  • Test when you add a new number, user or location.
  • Do a quick check every few months.
